About

Maria Galvan Cobo was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1990.

She graduated from the Complutense University of Madrid, with a BA in Fine Arts.

Following her sense of adventure and her curiosity about different perspectives and cultural identities, she decided to leave Madrid. After some travelling she decided to stay in Greece for a while. That was in 2011.

During the last 7 years she shares her time between Athens and Madrid, where she works, trying to observe and identify elements that define the social imaginary. Her projects are mainly based on those observations and they revolve around the construction process of every image, as well as the production of discourses in societies through them. The predominant medium of her work is painting, the way to build new visual realities.

In her work we can find, in the conceptual sense, a connection of Genre art and Pop culture with Figurative art, using classic techniques such as oil painting, combined with experimental materials.

As a result of the cultural mix experience, her work explores the symbiosis or fusion of different social elements using the medium of painting as part of the research process.

Focused on the pictorial world she has also developed and co-directed cultural projects such as “Y Residency”, an Artist Residency in Athens, where artists from all over the world were coming to Greece to develop their projects.

Maria has been part of numerous exhibitions in Spain and Greece, and she has created various artworks for private collections.
